Preparing the Yards

Over the past two years, we've spent a lot of time working on Little Mount Vernon... not only on the house, but in the yard as well. And since we are Do-it-Yourselfers--no matter what the task--we tend to try to do as much of the work as we can ourselves. Preparing the yard has been an ongoing project. First Night on the Grounds

So our dear friend, Mrs. Karen Prewitt, interior designer and owner of Quattro Canti Interiors , suggested back in November that we turn our attention from restoring the house itself to preparing the grounds for our first event--an oyster roast. So, at Thanksgiving we began a major cleaning out and preparing the North front lawn for our 1st Night on the Grounds! Our last post showed the massive cleanout we did to improve the site, so I won't bore you with the demolition and building cleanup. I thought after that post most of the work was done; however, there was plenty more to do to prepare for guests.

Since Thanksgiving and between Christmas holiday activities, we have still been working on Saving Little Mount Vernon, but we have turned our attention from the house restoration to the grounds. Grounds which contained outbuildings so covered over with vines and trees that we didn't even know they existed until some time after our purchase of the house.
